John Watson comments:

An important new team, so successful in the past in world sportscar racing with Mercedes Benz. In many ways the unofficial F1 team of Mercedes and success could lead to greater involvement from this famous Stuttgart manufacturer. They have cleverly secured sole use of the latest version of the Ilmor V10 engine but start with '92 units Performance in winter testing was impressive but reliability less so. The team may suffer from having two rather inexperienced test drivers in their race line-up.
Sauber make their Formula One debut with JJ Lehto and Karl Wendlinger in their race line-up. Lehto, like Finnish compatriot Mika Hakkinen, has natural speed, flair and ability in abundance. He is an exciting driver to watch but, having never driven a good F1 car, may tend to drive through problems rather than recognise them. Wendlinger is considered by his former Mercedes team to be even quicker than Michael Schumacher. He is not quite so self-assured and not so quick out of the blocks.
