A watershed year for this team, the most successful team in GP racing for a decade. For the first time in 10 years they are not starting the season ahead in every department. The demise of Honda forced McLaren to become a paying customer, with a Ford HB engine, although I cannot imagine Ron Dennis having a customer-spec engine for long. McLaren must learn a new art, that of making their car work with an engine less powerful than some of their competitors namely Renault.
McLaren's driver line-up for South Africa now confirms Ayrton Senna as team leader for this Grand Prix. Senna is simply the best even if he sometimes fails to make allowances for the varying abilities of others. Senna racing leaves Mika Hakkinen sidelined which is a shame since he is one of F1's brightest young prospects. But watch this space. Michael Andretti will definitely drive. He is fast, courageous and a superb competitor - in Indy cars. He will learn fast in F1 but I doubt his plans to reside in the US. |
