Senna
should have
to gain an understanding of turboengines,
qualifying tires
and things
like that. Schumacher
is the child of an era
of telemetry. What time is
harder?
"The level
of
difficulty has remained same.
Only an
approach became another.
The
car
changes from the first
session on Friday to
the race not so hardly
today. And as
it is,
everyone can work on setup of the car.
Look
on the starting grid of our times and 10 years ago.
You will see that
cars are differs from each other very much.
Today's
driver
has
to squeeze out a maximum of possible from all the components if
he wants to achieve a high place in qualifying.
In turbo-times
there were special qualifying tires
and drivers
have to just increase a turbine
pressure receive short-lived useful increase of power. But
this, in turn, demanded of the
drivers
an
unusual
skill
to change their driving style under
broken behavior of a bolid in the shortest time
. And if you'll
look on the qualifying times you'll see how hard it was to make
your job on 100 percents. Maybe
no one could do that or, at
least, is very rare. Any
way if you've done it with
80-percentage "hit" you
can be sure to take 3rd
or 4th
place
on the starting grid. Today
all
you can think of if you've done your work for a 80 percents it's
just a 15th
place
ot worse."
And
on whom would stoke Rory
Burn -
on Senna or on Schumacher?
"It is impossible to compare the drivers
from
different decades.
It is maybe
possible just
to compare races
in
which have take part both of the drivers
and if we'll
make it we'll
see that
in 1993 Senna certainly
surpassed Schumacher,
but in 1994 up to Imola
Schumacher
didn't
succumb to Senna. It
is impossible to say anything else.
As to another
skills both of them perfectly
possessed an
ability to concentrate on
the many other things apart of
the control of a bolid. I would
never be
able to control the car
and
to discuss the weather
forecast
at the same time, tactics of
pit-stops, and
how worn are
the tires of my rivals. I
always was amazed
that they can
do that. When I recall a
World Champions
with which I worked
it is that point which distinguishes Senna and Schumacher
from all
others".
Nigel
Stepney has had an opportunity
to
work with Senna in Lotus and he
works today with Schumacher
in Ferrari. "Some drivers
suppose that they are something especial
only because they
are sit in the Formula
1 car. You
can just forget about such driers.
Ayrton
and Michael
is just another. When Ayrton
has come in Lotus all of us have experienced something especial,
mysterious. On
one hand they
are a normal people as you
and I, but something unusual
surrounds them. I don't
know what is it but it real.
They always keep
calmness and diffuse around them
the sense
of a confidence. They
are great in their
business
but they don't
give other
people to experience their
superiority.

And
one more
thing distinguishes them
from all others. When
a customary driver
speaks about a bolid
you can hear permanently:
"It is bad, it
doesn't work". When you
hear such words from the
really good driver
you can believe
it. I rememberl
one test session
with Ayrton
in Brasil.
After
couple of laps he has changed
braking balance
unexpectedly,
having considered that the machine behaves not good,
and
it was rather exotic
because we haven't
changed anything.
We
haven't find any deviations of
what should be but Ayrton
continued
to said that something is not
in order. And only a lot of time after we
have found out incidentally
what was
the cause
Ayrton's words. So, Ayrton
did not make a mistake,
he has
feel something. And if
Michael speaks that something
not in the order you
can be on 99 % sure that it
is so.
Ayrton
has one more great skill: he drove
in the times when it was
necessary to keep
an eye on
the consumption of gasoline.
And he always
exactly knew where he can save
a pair of drips. It is necessary to realize
it - he bears with a
mad speed, and in
two - three places looks
on a flow transducer of gasoline. Ayrton
exactly knew on what place of
the indication of the sensor will change
and whether he has
overexpenditure
of the fuel.
In
Detroit, he has driven on a cover of a manhole. During the
pit-stop he has asked me to have a look under the car. At
inspection was straightened out that he has torn off the eyes of
an oil tank of a gearbox. As an oil stains wasn't visible one of
our mechanics has said to me: "Don't
tell
him anything. Say that it's
all right". After the
race Ayrton
has asked
me: "Well,
what have you seen
under the car?
" I've
explained to him a situation. Ayrton
was disappointed: "You
should have
said
it to me. I
wouldn't
drive
over it any more. I would
select another
pathway". Suddenly
I've
felt
an improbable respect
to him. It
was impossible to hide
anything from him. As well as
from Michael.
They always find the eligible people which speaks
truth
to them in any
situations.".
"I
remember one case, when Ayrton
in Monaco'88
has broke
the car
only because he
has slow
down and, naturally, his
concentration has decreased too.
Formula
1 drivers are always on
the limit and only some
of them can slow down on his own wish.
It is
possible only when the driver
will find a way psychologically
to show
100% of
his abilities even in the
situations
when the engine is loaded only on 90%. Michael
has expirienced
this last year in Spa
and I think, he has made the same conclusions
as Ayrton
in
Monaco'88.
I don't
think that this
will happen to
him once again.
With
drivers like Michael
or Ayrton
we always went to
the Grand Prix with firm
reliance that we can achieve good result.
Since I have once
experienced this feeling I won't
work
in a team
which has no such wish
to win. Both
of them
has so great desire to win
that all team
appears picked up by this gust. "
And
who is the best of them - Ayrton
or Michael?
"I
obligatory have to answer?" Silence... " I
can't..."
